MANILA: THE COMPETITION

OTHER POTENTCIAL APPLICANT CITIES HAVE BIDED,NOT JUST MANILA:
Africa
Durban, along with Cape Town, is planning on bidding for the 2020 Summer Olympics. If Durban does not win the bid, there is a possibility that they will bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics.[1]

[edit] Asia

Taiwan's capital and largest city may put in a bid in accordance with a campaign promise made by now-president Ma Ying-jeou while he was running for president in 2008. It is seen as the culmination of a build-up in hosting sporting events for Taipei and the rest of Taiwan. Taipei hosted the 2009 Deaflympics while Kaohsiung hosted the 2009 World Games.[2]

[edit] Europe

The French capital was unsuccessful in vying to be the host city for the 1992, 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. The year 2024 will mark the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Summer Olympics held in Paris. The former French Minister of Sports, Jean-Francois Lamour, had made it clear that 2024 represents a choice objective for a Parisian bid. €35 million will be planned to build new sports venues around Paris in order to improve quality of the future Parisian bid.[3][4][5]
The organization of the Games in Copenhagen has proposed a joint bid in the Oresund Region and is investigated by the Danish government.[6] A cooperation with Malmö and other cities in the region has been proposed.[7] Malmö politicians are positive to the idea of arranging Olympics together with the neighboring country, Denmark.[7] If the Oresund Region bids and wins, it will be the first Olympics organized by two different countries at the same time and unless a proposed Montreal/Lake Placid bid occurs for the 2022 Winter Olympics, this would be the first multi-national bid.
The Dutch city of Amsterdam showed interest to bid for the Games.[8] Amsterdam is noted for hosting the 1928 Summer Olympics.
Madrid is planning a bid for the 2024, or the 2020 Summer Olympics.[9] The city bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics but was defeated by Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Ukrainian Vice-Prime Minister, Borys Kolesnikov, stated that in the case that Ukraine successfully co-hosts the Euro 2012 with Poland, it may potentially place a bid for hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics.[10]

[edit] North America

On July 10, 2007 it was revealed that the Canadian Olympic Committee had begun work on a potential bid for the 2020 or 2024 games for Toronto, the capital of Ontario and largest city in Canada.[11] This would be Toronto's third bid for the summer Olympic games, after unsuccessful bids for the 1996 and 2008 games, but a successful bid for the 2015 Pan American Games.
Monterrey mulled a bid for the 2016 Games, but the Mexican Olympic Committee (MOC) did not support the bid. Felipe "El Tibio" Muñoz, President of the MOC, announced that some cities in Mexico like Monterrey will contend to gain support to bid for the 2020 games. In August 2008, the governor of Nuevo León, the Mexican state whose capital is Monterrey, gave his support for a possible bid, resuming the discussion of whether or not to bid. In February 2009, plans were announced to build the Estadio Internacional Monterrey, a 75,000 capacity stadium. [39] At the same time Club Futbol Monterrey plans to begin the construction of their own stadium by the end of 2009 with a capacity of 50,000 spectators. Both stadiums could be used for some eventual Olympic events. Students of the universities of Monterrey supported hosting the Games. The Monterrey 2014 Foundation declared it would bid for 2018 Summer Youth Olympics if Guadalajara loses its 2014 bid, and the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.[12]
Larry Needle, executive director of the Philadelphia Sports Congress, said that if Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania, wants to host the Olympics, its earliest realistic chance would be the 2024 Summer Games.[13] A study by eleven graduate students from the University of Pennsylvania showed that Philadelphia should consider bidding for the 2024 Olympics. The study said that one of the city's biggest challenges would be convincing the voters who select the host city that Philadelphia is a "world-class city", something that "will require strategic changes in the city’s landscape in conjunction with a persuasive marketing strategy". A movement to get the Olympics is underway on Facebook on the page Summer Olympics Philadelphia 2024.

[edit] Oceania

Brisbane has been pre-selected by the Australian Olympic Committee as the next most likely Australian bid city, possibly within 15 to 20 years, which has been further endorsed by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh and Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman.[14] Brisbane hosted the 1982 Commonwealth Games, World Expo '88, and the 2001 Goodwill Games.
Melbourne is considering a bid for either the 2024 or 2028 Summer Olympics. The only major venue that would need to be constructed would be a rowing and canoeing course. The city hosted the 1956 Summer Olympics and the 2006 Commonwealth Games. It already has the infrastructure in place to host such an event.[15]

[edit] South America

President of the Peruvian Institute for Sports, Arturo Woodman, said that Peru would try to bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.[16] Although the games being held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 might pose a challenge as the IOC will view it as too recent for a South American return.[17]

MANILA:THE BIGESST DEAL

Through theses days, our team was very busy on campaigning the said 2024 Olympic Bid of the City of Manila & other important stuff. And within these lapse of time, our team realized the things which we must consider in our campaign. Finally, we came up with a decision to have “a major renovation”, that will improve & upgrade our team’s strategic plan to gain more appeal/ support to the readers and supporters.
First, the team will study on the pre-selected possible bids of the country until we came up with one of the bids. This bid will be then studied thoroughly by the members & will be presented to the public for recommendations and suggestions. After this stage, the committee will hold a poll/ survey to the public ( via internet) on which city fits to bid/ host the said games. The results will be then analyze by the evaluation committee and will be passed to the campaign team for recommendations. The assigned committee will then after collect data, assess, and finally create a bid book ( containing the possibility of the bid, some information/ data regarding to the place, etc.) which will be passed to the Philippine Olympic Committee for their opinion and further suggestion. The team will also consult to the chosen city if they are open to this bid.
Until then, this is the time that the campaign team will work on to create noise in spreading the news!

We would like to express our heartfelt and deepest gratitude for all those people who take part in this campaign. And for that, the group has decided to extend the deadline for the Solicitation program.

However, we have also decided that instead of a Manila 2024 Logo, it would be a logo for Team Pilipinas - the group which promotes the campaigns for hosting Sports Gatherings here in the country. The Manila 2024 text would be change as Philippines 2024, A logo or the Philippines 2018 Asian Games campaign as well as to the Philippines 2019 SEA Games. We would also like to stress the rule that NO OLYMPIC LOGOS OR SYMBOLS SHALL BE PLACED/ USED IN THE SUBMITTED LOGOS.

The Manila 2024 Campaign Team and together with our other colleagues launches a solicitation program for the logos of 2024 Manila Olympic Bid, 2019 Southeast Asian Games, 2019 Asian Games Bid for our campaign.

All you need to do is to create a logo that symbolizes the 3 Games (the Olympics, Southeast Asian Games, and the Asian Games), must also showcase the Host City / Country’s Culture (Manila and the Philippines) and lastly, must be unique.

Your entries together with a description (at least 75+ words) maybe submitted to our e-mail: manila2024@gmail.com on or before June 12, 2008. The top 10 will be then announced in the website and our team will conduct a popularity poll for who will win the solicitation program. There will be no price but your piece may bring honor to us, Filipinos.

Manila once hosted the 2nd Asian Games in 1952 and is likely to take for another one that is why, the Philippine Government plans to construct a new stadium in the city of Pasay, south of Metro Manila.

Though traffic jams are notorious in Manila, the Manila Metropolitan Development Authority takes effort in decongest traffic through construction of flyovers, organized bus routes and u-turn slots.

MANILA: THE BIDS

Games of the 33rd Olympiad

The Olympic Games and the IOC

The Olympic Games is an international multi-sport event subdivided into summer and winter sporting events. The summer and winter games are each held every four years (an Olympiad). Until 1992, they were both held in the same year. Since then, they have been separated two years apart.

The International Olympic Committee was founded in 1894 on the initiative of a French nobleman, Pierre Frédy, Baron de Coubertin. The first of the IOC's Olympic Games were the 1896 Summer Olympics, held in Athens, Greece. Participation in the Olympic Games has increased to include athletes from nearly all nations worldwide. With the improvement of satellite communications and global telecasts of the events, the Olympics are consistently gaining supporters. The most recent Summer Olympics were the 2004 Games in Athens and the most recent Winter Olympics were the 2006 Games in Turin. The upcoming games in Beijing are planned to comprise 302 events in 28 sports. As of 2006, the Winter Olympics were competed in 84 events in 7 sports.

Olympic Council of Asia

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is a governing body of sports in the conitnent of Asia, currently with 44 member National Olympic Committees. It is the continental organization reognized by the International Olympic Committee. The current president is Sheikh Fahad Al-Sabah (Qatar). The oldest member of the OCASIA or sometimes OCA  is the NOC of  Japan, recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1912; whereas Timor-Leste is the youngest NOC, joining in 2003(Joined first Olympic Games in Athens last 2004).

The OCA was formed in 1982 and has its permanent headquarters in Kuwait. The main objective of the Olympic Council of Asia is to develop  sport, culture and education of Asian youth and to promote international respect, friendship, goodwill & peace through sports.

MANILA:THE CITY

LOCATION

Manila lies at the mouth of the Pasig River on the eastern shores of Manila Bay, which is on the western side of Luzon. It lies about 950 kilometers southeast of Hong Kong and 2,400 kilometers northeast of Singapore. The river bisects the city in the middle. Almost all of the city sits on top of centuries of prehistoric alluvial deposits built by the waters of the Pasig River and on some land reclaimed from Manila Bay. The layout of the city was haphazardly planned during Spanish Era as a set of communities surrounding the original Spanish Era walled city of Manila, called Intramuros. Intramuros is one of the oldest walled cities in the far east. During the American Period, some semblance of city planning using the architectural designs and master plans by Daniel Burnham was done on the portions of the city south of the Pasig River. Burnham, the noted American city planner and architect, was famed for his plans and designs of Chicago, Cleveland (the Group Plan), San Francisco, Washington, DC (the McMillan Plan), and Baguio City, details of which appear in The Chicago Plan publication of 1909.
Manila is bordered by several municipalities and cities in Metro Manila: Navotas and Caloocan City to the north, Quezon City to the northeast, San Juan and Mandaluyong City to the east, Makati City to the southeast, and Pasay City to the south.

COMMERCE

Every district in the city with the exception of Port Area has its own public market, locally called the pamilihang bayan or Palengke. Public markets are often divided into two, the dry goods section and the wet goods section. Commerce in these public markets is lively, especially in the early morning. Under the urban renewal program of the incumbent administration, some of the public markets had been refurbished and given a fresher look, like the Sta. Ana public market.
Modern shopping malls dot the city especially in the areas of Malate and Ermita. SM City Manila, part of the country's largest chain of malls, stands behind the Manila City Hall, while the original SM Department store still operates in Carriedo in Sta. Cruz while another called SM Centrepoint is located north east of the city in Sta. Mesa close to the Quezon City-San Juan boundary. One of the popular malls that lies at the heart of Manila is Robinson's Place Ermita. In the southern part of the city in Malate district is Harrison Plaza, one of the city's oldest shopping malls.

TRANSPORTATION

Air

Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), eight kilometres south of the city centre, serves Manila, the Metro Manila area and the nearby provinces. Over 40 airlines provide daily service to over 26 cities and 19 countries worldwide. Approximately 17 million travellers use NAIA a year, straining what was originally a domestic airport built in the 1930s. A second terminal, Terminal 2 (or the Centennial Terminal) opened in October 1999. The International flag-carrier Philippine Airlines now uses this terminal exclusively for both its domestic and international service while all other international flights use the original NAIA terminal. Air Philippines is in the transition to the newer Terminal 2 alongside PAL.

Rail Transport

Manila is the hub of a railway system on Luzon. The main terminal of the Philippine National Railways is in the Tondo district. Railways extend from this terminal north to the city of San Fernando in Pampanga and south to Legazpi City in Albay, though only the southern railway is currently in operation.
Manila is also serviced by the Manila Light Rail Transit System (separate from Manila Metro Rail Transit System), a national priority project designed to address the overwhelming traffic that congests the national capital. Development of the system began with its inception in the 1970s under the Marcos administration, making it the first light rail transport in Southeast Asia.

Seaports and Piers

The City of Manila is the chief seaport of the Philippines. North Harbor and South Harbor experience busy periods during long holidays such as Holy Week, All Saints Day and the Christmas holidays. The Port of Manila serves the city's commercial needs, it also one of South East Asia's more major ports.
