- Durban, along with Cape Town, is planning on bidding for the 2020 Summer Olympics. If Durban does not win the bid, there is a possibility that they will bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics.[1]
[edit] Asia
- Taiwan's capital and largest city may put in a bid in accordance with a campaign promise made by now-president Ma Ying-jeou while he was running for president in 2008. It is seen as the culmination of a build-up in hosting sporting events for Taipei and the rest of Taiwan. Taipei hosted the 2009 Deaflympics while Kaohsiung hosted the 2009 World Games.[2]
[edit] Europe
- The French capital was unsuccessful in vying to be the host city for the 1992, 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. The year 2024 will mark the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Summer Olympics held in Paris. The former French Minister of Sports, Jean-Francois Lamour, had made it clear that 2024 represents a choice objective for a Parisian bid. €35 million will be planned to build new sports venues around Paris in order to improve quality of the future Parisian bid.[3][4][5]
- The organization of the Games in Copenhagen has proposed a joint bid in the Oresund Region and is investigated by the Danish government.[6] A cooperation with Malmö and other cities in the region has been proposed.[7] Malmö politicians are positive to the idea of arranging Olympics together with the neighboring country, Denmark.[7] If the Oresund Region bids and wins, it will be the first Olympics organized by two different countries at the same time and unless a proposed Montreal/Lake Placid bid occurs for the 2022 Winter Olympics, this would be the first multi-national bid.
- The Dutch city of Amsterdam showed interest to bid for the Games.[8] Amsterdam is noted for hosting the 1928 Summer Olympics.
- Madrid is planning a bid for the 2024, or the 2020 Summer Olympics.[9] The city bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics but was defeated by Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
- Ukrainian Vice-Prime Minister, Borys Kolesnikov, stated that in the case that Ukraine successfully co-hosts the Euro 2012 with Poland, it may potentially place a bid for hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics.[10]
[edit] North America
- On July 10, 2007 it was revealed that the Canadian Olympic Committee had begun work on a potential bid for the 2020 or 2024 games for Toronto, the capital of Ontario and largest city in Canada.[11] This would be Toronto's third bid for the summer Olympic games, after unsuccessful bids for the 1996 and 2008 games, but a successful bid for the 2015 Pan American Games.
- Monterrey mulled a bid for the 2016 Games, but the Mexican Olympic Committee (MOC) did not support the bid. Felipe "El Tibio" Muñoz, President of the MOC, announced that some cities in Mexico like Monterrey will contend to gain support to bid for the 2020 games. In August 2008, the governor of Nuevo León, the Mexican state whose capital is Monterrey, gave his support for a possible bid, resuming the discussion of whether or not to bid. In February 2009, plans were announced to build the Estadio Internacional Monterrey, a 75,000 capacity stadium. [39] At the same time Club Futbol Monterrey plans to begin the construction of their own stadium by the end of 2009 with a capacity of 50,000 spectators. Both stadiums could be used for some eventual Olympic events. Students of the universities of Monterrey supported hosting the Games. The Monterrey 2014 Foundation declared it would bid for 2018 Summer Youth Olympics if Guadalajara loses its 2014 bid, and the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.[12]
- Larry Needle, executive director of the Philadelphia Sports Congress, said that if Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania, wants to host the Olympics, its earliest realistic chance would be the 2024 Summer Games.[13] A study by eleven graduate students from the University of Pennsylvania showed that Philadelphia should consider bidding for the 2024 Olympics. The study said that one of the city's biggest challenges would be convincing the voters who select the host city that Philadelphia is a "world-class city", something that "will require strategic changes in the city’s landscape in conjunction with a persuasive marketing strategy". A movement to get the Olympics is underway on Facebook on the page Summer Olympics Philadelphia 2024.
[edit] Oceania
- Brisbane has been pre-selected by the Australian Olympic Committee as the next most likely Australian bid city, possibly within 15 to 20 years, which has been further endorsed by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh and Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman.[14] Brisbane hosted the 1982 Commonwealth Games, World Expo '88, and the 2001 Goodwill Games.
- Melbourne is considering a bid for either the 2024 or 2028 Summer Olympics. The only major venue that would need to be constructed would be a rowing and canoeing course. The city hosted the 1956 Summer Olympics and the 2006 Commonwealth Games. It already has the infrastructure in place to host such an event.[15]
[edit] South America
- President of the Peruvian Institute for Sports, Arturo Woodman, said that Peru would try to bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.[16] Although the games being held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 might pose a challenge as the IOC will view it as too recent for a South American return.[17]
